Idea description:

It‘s no tremendous fi nding that Bratislava is a European curiosity from the aspect of ignoring the Danube water stream and its embanquements. But we are still bewildered by the fact that very little was done in this fi eld during the last few decades. To be truthful, almost nothing. We are therefore reminded of this persisting situation by the proposal prepared by Designers on the Wheels. The draft ed solution is based on the fact that the promenade doesn‘t only consist of „the pavement and benches“, but also takes into account the strong entry of so called „attractors“ along the whole Danube banks from the New Bridge down to the Old Bridge. Throughout the year, the embankments are “activated” by a varied mixture of functions complementing one to another and distributed along the jetty, which changes its shape and course as required. The environment developed in this way off ers a lot of situations and opportunities for relaxation, culture experience, dinning or sport being created. It’s a space which enables both public and private investments to be combined. A powerful aspect of the proposal is the active inter-connection between both banks of the Danube River. The promenade runs next to both bridges at a height assuring confl ict free co-existence with the shipping transport towards the other bank and creates a continual ring – a never-ending country – the missing link between both banks of the Danube River. An inter-connection connecting Staré mesto with Bratislava’s Petržalka and with the Sad Janka Kráľa. At the same time, this clear gesture ensures coherency of the solution and eliminates the sense of frustration invoked by the “beach end”. If we succeed in keeping full-value life on the embankment throughout the year, the solution will help the city in achieving new qualities appropriate to the function and ambitions of the capital. Bratislava will thus provide more facilities to its inhabitants and the tourist industry will be positively affected too.
