Idea description:

In our opinion, the Staré Mesto’s embankment pedestrian zone “doesn‘t work“ due to their being no “active places” present there., Walking hand
in hand there could be nice, but not for several kilometres without any impulses. The position and function of the pedestrian promenade is predestined for various micro spaces offering possibilities for movement, rest, sport, relaxation, chilling out, performances and exhibition premises. During the course of this summer we have recognized that the majority of people were moving towards the other bank of the Danube River to sink their feet into the sand, watch- ing the city or watching their children playing… the same for us. The question is whether we need to depend on the T-Com beach used as a public city space, when we want to walk out, to sit down, to watch the river and to sunbathe, and which is, by the way, operated only seasonally; then what to do after the summer is
over… The proposal is focused on es- tablishing several smaller public spaces, “X-points”, creating 5 sectors – zones such as MUSIC, ART, CAMP, THEATRE and JETTY purposed on activating particular sections of the Staré Mesto’s embank- ment zone.
Our attention was focused on the Vajanského Embankment and the premises around Propeler, occupying a strategic position within the pedestrian promenade axis. It’s located at the crossing of two important lines, a horizontal promenade line and a vertical Mostová Street line starting at the National Theatre and continuing towards the embankment, its potential for connecting both banks by a foot- bridge inclusive. At the same time, it‘s the first contact point for tourists getting off the barges. The em- bankment area at this point is too small to be used as a diverging surface for tourists and for Bratislava‘s citizens. We have therefore decided to extend the area and to propose a „jetty“ with a view as well as with graded level plateaus descending down to the river. The jetty shall be an extension of the wooden plateau divided horizontally into several segments, which can be, at certain moments, used as benches, playfields, advertisement or exhibition premises or, during the summer season, as bars or, during the winter season, as a Christmas market. The jetty element as such was understood as a city movable consisting of several horizontally divided segments
a) pushing stuff out – benches,
b) pushing stuff in – a bed for sandpits, lawns and gravel, and
c) creating layers – amphitheatre; Various situations will be allowed to occur within these segments, allowing for various combinations of the city mobile jetty.
